Marriage in the Qur’an: A sacred contract between the three of you!
In the Qur’an, marriage is uniquely described as a “solemn pledge” (mithāq) (Q.4:21). This expression undoubtedly indicates a sincere relationship that is based on a serious commitment. To fully understand the term) mithāq(, it is sufficient to note that the Qur’an uses the same term to describe the covenant between God and prophets, “We took a solemn pledge from the prophets—from you, from Noah, from Abraham, from Moses, from Jesus, son of Mary—We took a solemn pledge from all of them” (Q.33:7). This heavy contract is not only a contact between a man and a woman as many might think, but a contact between a man, woman and God himself. Therefor any violation of this contact is an offence against God himself. God- fearing spouses should use the guidance in the Qur’an as a GPS for a happy, blessed and a successful marriage. For example, cheating remains sinful or haram even if someone stops loving their spouse. Consequentially, in cases of marital dishonesty asking for forgiveness would be required from the wronged spouse and from God. Spouses are beautifully described in the Qur’an as a “joy” as we read in (Q.25:74) and as close protecting “garments” to each other as we read in (Q.2:187). This sacred contact we call marriage does not end by the death of spouses. As the Qur’an describes the souls of both believing men and women will be rejoined in the afterlife, as we read in “the people of Paradise today are happily occupied [55] they and their spouses seated on couches in the shade [56]” (Q. 36:55–56). In (Q.13:23) we read more about the eternity of marriage, “They will enter perpetual Gardens, along with their righteous ancestors, spouses, and descendants”. For more see
